Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui

There is common confusion in regards to these two ancient arts and sciences.

Many people have the notion that Vastu Shastra (from India) deals with buildings while Feng Shui (from China) deals with interior placement. The practitioners of both are illogically viewed. It is similar to believing that an architect deals strictly with design and a Feng Shui consultant strictly with decor.

The common thread Vastu and Feng Shui share is the goal of creating aesthetically BALANCED ENVIRONMENTS that are harmonious and supportive of people and the earth. Both use science, art and metaphysics to achieve optimum health and well being for the occupants of a habitat.

Vastu and Feng Shui are closely linked to the “visible and invisible” forces of nature. Likewise, both healing modalities are based on the idea that the chi, or the life force energy of an environment, has its own distinctive personality. This is TRUE.

When ambient energy is in balance with nature, infinite opportunities and blessings flow effortlessly and abundantly to people occupying a habitat, yet each living environment (home or office) is different based on its own unique - time, space, location and compass degrees.

In Feng Shui, it is the ENVIRONMENT which shapes and changes life for the better. Internal changes - emotional, mental, physical, social and financial - are brought about by a balanced external environment.

The environment has several elements which according to Vastu are Jal, Vayu, Prithvi, Aakash and Agni. In Feng Shui the basic elements are FIRE, EARTH, METAL, WATER and WOOD.

The translation of the five elements of VASTU SHASTRA mentioned above are:

EARTH:  Viewed as a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attraction. Its magnetic field and gravitational force have telling effects on everything living and non-living on the earth.

WATER:  Is represented by rain, river and sea. It forms a part of every plant and animal. Likewise, our blood is water with hemoglobin and oxygen.

AIR:  Is the life-supporting element of Vastu; it is a very powerful life source. Pure air with oxygen supports the brain and blood. Air deals with the entire body surface through the skin, blood system and respiration. Air also represents movement (chi).

FIRE:  Represents light and heat without which life would not exist. Days, nights, seasons, energy, enthusiasm, passion, health and vigor are viewed as light and heat, as is the sun in this modality.

SPACE:  Is considered the primary conductor of all energy sources within the universal context of Vastu. Physical energies such as sound and light, social energies such as psychological and emotional, and cognitive energies such as intellect and intuition are formed and shaped by space.

Albeit in a small way, I hope this helps to clarify the similarities and differences of these two ancient arts and sciences that enrich human life.
